Additions to the Agenda: none
New Business:
- Lifestyle Essentials’ quarterly report - A copy of the January fitness newsletter was distributed. - A recent survey of group exercise students resulted in a few time changes, with additional mi-nor changes forthcoming. - A Youth Speed & Agility class has been added; and an arthritis class is coming. - Amy passed along thank you from the participants to David for the new mats. These mats do not slide like the last set did. - Seasonal challenges included a Halloween Challenge showing snack size candy bars, their calories, and how long it would take to work the candy calories off. The current challenge is a Maintain-Not-Gain Weight Challenge.
Old Business:
- Lifestyle Essentials monthly report – as noted in the packet.
- Evendale Bike Master Plan Update - Surveys are due by January 31, 2013. Michele Gottschlich has volunteered to tabulate the data. - Master Plan should be finished in the first quarter of 2013. The final Bicycle and Pedestrian Pathway Master Plan will be presented to recreation commission, the village planning commis-sion, village council committee, and then village council for acceptance/approval.
Director’s Report:
- Members were asked to review and update their contact information.
- Commission members were asked to think about, and submit, goals and objectives for the commis-sion and department for 2013. Completion and receiving Council’s acceptance/approval, of the Bike and Pathway Master is on David’s list of goals for 2013.
- David has already ordered a NuStep machine for the fitness center. Focusing on, and enhancing, our group fitness classes may include bringing Jazzercise here.
- A new grill was ordered, and received, for the shelter house.
- A third panic button has been added in the child care room. The first one was placed at the front control desk, and later, one was added at the department’s secretary’s desk. This third panic button at the south end of the building is just in case something happens at that end of the build-ing.
- David has contacted our police and fire departments about additional program collaborations - the new archery range, a fishing program. The fire department will be re-certifying the department staff this year in CPR and AED. The fire department will also be updating our inclement weather safety shelter locations. Police and Fire chiefs are reviewing our department’s Emergency Action Plan. It may be of interest to our residents to offer a CPR class for residents.
- Linda Manzo, Active Adult and Senior Adult Program Specialist, is planning an Adult Prom on Satur-day, February 23rd from 7:00pm to Midnight. Several residents are helping plan the event.
- Our Snow Much Fun Winter Festival takes place on Friday, January 25th. This year, we will have a small fireworks display as part of the program. A message notifying residents of the fireworks will be sent out from our police department via the village call-multiplier system; we will also send an email blast through the village website and another email through the department software in hopes to notify as many residents as possible of the fireworks show. (Note: no village depart-ments received calls from concerned residents.)
- ADA evaluations and possible changes are still being worked on at the federal level. We should be sufficient at the pool; however, a lift may need to be added at the indoor spa.
- Soccer field improvements continue. The department is still evaluating if expanding soccer field #3 is needed, as soccer team sizes continue to decrease. However, expansion of Soccer #3 remains on David’s Five Year Capital Improvement list.
- Chris Schuermann, Gorman Heritage Farm, was here in September and discussed a possible St. Patrick’s Day event collaboration. Unfortunately, at this time, the farm will not be having a St. Pat-rick’s event; however, the farm is planning a square dance event for March 16th.
- 2013 facility improvements include caulking the pool joints; staining the trellises; applying new sur-face material on the women’s pool restroom floor; as well as a few other things.
- Membership renewals and sales continue. Business memberships are still available.
Phi Lambda Pi Report:
- December is a quiet time for the group due to school mid-terms; the annual holiday party and over-night being the highlight.
- A few ceiling tiles in the teen room were taken down, decorated by the members, then re-installed in the ceiling. “Interesting” artistic styles were demonstrated during this activity. Other activities have included playing volleyball, basketball and just hanging out.
- The group decided not to plan a winter trip this year; but rather to take small Friday trips instead. The hope is to get more people involved.
Open Discussion:
- Wayne Mosley has seen flag football yard signs, seemingly, everywhere in the Sycamore/Montgomery area. It would be interesting to see if there was an interest for the program among the kids of Evendale. Several years ago we tried this, but David will investigate the Sycamore/Montgomery program and if there is new interest within Evendale. With recent events involving sports players who have suffered concussions, and the NFL football wrapping up soon, concus-sions have been in the news. The department has placed a poster on the bulletin board about concussions (facts, symptoms & why it should be reported). Flag football is a nice compromise between the fun of football and safety. Our youth soccer program does not teach participants how to head the ball until they reach Strikers age (U-12). As a result of the concussion awareness movement, Evendale will
take part in a free CDC program called Heads Up Concussion in Youth Sports starting with this Spring’s sports programs.
- Speaking of youth sports, Georgia Bergan was at her grandson’s soccer game, when at the end of the game, the Sycamore team voted on which opposing player had the best sportsmanship that day. It is apparently a tradition for the Sycamore team to vote, and then present him, or her, with something. It may relieve the cut-throat play of the game; it makes the child feel good; and may potentially spread to the other players to play with better sportsmanship. It is an interesting idea for Evendale to consider.
- A question raised last year about opening a dog park for dog’s to run free in. Gorman Heritage Farm has a fenced –in area in the farm’s upper meadow; there, dogs could conceivable be off-leash to run. If anyone hears anything more from community members, please let David know and we can re-visit.
Motion to adjourn made at 8:26am by Katie Touvelle; seconded by Wayne Mosley. Motion approved
